RANTOUL, Ill. (WCCU) — The village of Rantoul is headed to the big screen this year after a local film production company agreed to work with a film director to help create the movie. Writer Mark Roberts gained a lot of recognition for his 2009 play “Rantoul and Die.”
Since then, he’s been in talks with a local production company about turning the play into a film.
“The community should get excited about it,” central Illinois resident Jason Richards said. “I mean, Hollywood is coming to town, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s going to boost the economy, and it’s going to be a buzzer around town.”
Roberts produced successful sitcoms like “Mike and Molly” and “Two and a Half Men.” He also wrote the play “Rantoul and Die.” Now Roberts and Shatterglass Films are teaming up to turn the play into a movie.
“We read the script and it was just an incredible script,” producer at Shatterglass Films Brett Hays said. “Hilarious and just very well-written and we’ve been talking with [Roberts] for the last couple of years and we just felt like now is the time to put that together.”
The play is described as a “dark comedy” about a woman who desperately wants to leave her husband who is holding on to the past. It had successful shows in many cities including Chicago and New York City.
“It’s one of those… I just can’t stop laughing when I read it,” Hays said. “It’s just so well written so we’re excited for other people to see it as well.”
The studio said there are plenty of ways the film can benefit Rantoul and surrounding communities.
“When we bring a film to a community, we’re looking for local support, but we’re also looking to help build the economy and help build the film industry,” Hays said.
The team expects to start shooting the film this summer.
Shatterglass Films is looking for locations or businesses in Rantoul where they can start shooting the film –- send information to email@example.com.
They’re also planning to have casting auditions sometime this year.
