“If you build it they will come” is the plan for the recently opened Champaign County Film Office the only other official state film office outside of Chicago.

The Film Office, in the person of Terri Reifsteck, is part of the Champaign County Convention & Visitors Bureau, of which Reifsteck is marketing and business development director.

University of Illinois, historic architecture and pristine farmlands, it has only a bare sliver of indigenous production. Currently, there’s one production house, 10-year old Shatterglass Studios and a host of enthusiastic part-time hobbyist filmmakers.

Now lovers, creators, and friends of the world of film in the C-U community can more easily begin the steps to create a world before the lens. Shatterglass Studios, the award winning film production company, and the City of Champaign have collaborated to form a film office for both local and Hollywood directors wishing to call C-U home for their characters.

“Last summer when a film — Consumed — was happening here in Champaign County, Shatterglass Studios worked really closely with the producer [to] find locations and do the work that a city office would traditionally be doing,” said Terri Reifsteck, the Vice President of Marketing for Visit Champaign County.  Realizing it was something the community needed and lacked, the tourism board decided to have something a bit more focused instead of going the state-wide route. After Brett Hays, co-owner of Shatterglass Studios, reached out to them about the potential, it wasn’t long before the idea became a reality. She says, “it was a natural fit for our organization to get involved with this project.”

Shatterglass Studios has arrived.

The new media development, film and video production company has made quite a name for themselves in Champaign County.

Shatterglass has worked on a number of projects in the community with such prestigious clients as Ebertfest, The Illinois Connection, Carle, Gillette and more. The company has been featured in numerous film festivals, including the Sonoma International Film Festival and screened at the Cannes Independent Film Festival, winning several awards and accolades along the way.

While Brett Hays and Luke Boyce are happy to share the secret to their success, it is a trait uniquely theirs – their partnership.

Shatterglass’ Studio

in Blog / by Iman Sharabash
August 9, 2012

Throughout the years we’ve experienced some pretty amazing milestones. All of our films, getting one of the first RED ONE’s, getting asked to film Ebertfest and in 2010 when we moved in to our very first offices at the M2 building in Downtown Champaign. That was truly a seminal moment for us and we’ve absolutely cherished every last second we’ve been in those offices over the past couple of years. We truly feel that that opportunity really caused a ton of growth in our company.

A couple of months ago, we discovered that a vacancy would soon be occurring in a building that we’ve long dreamt about but had never considered a real possibility to be in. But, just as it tends to happen sometimes, destiny took it’s course. In May, a few different conversations took place that suddenly made our dream a very possible reality. Without hesitation, we started to pursue it, and on July 1st, we officially moved into 309 S. Neil St., where we’ve spent the past couple of weeks creating our dream space, and while it’s still a work-in-progress, we’d like to take this moment to give you a brief tour of the new Shatterglass “Studio,” if you will.
